Knowledge of high-carbon steel

The high-carbon steel is commonly known as tool steel and hardening and tempering with carbon content from 0.60% to 1.70%. Hammers, crowbars and other by the carbon content of 0.75% of the steel manufacturing; cutting tools such as drills, taps, reamers, steel carbon content of 0.90% to 1.00%.

The high-carbon steel is with high strength and hardness, high elastic limit and fatigue limit (especially the notched fatigue limit), the cutting performance is acceptable after hardening by suitable heat treatment or cold drawn, but poor weldability and cold plastic deformation capability. The high carbon content, water quenching prone to crack, so more than two-liquid quenching (water quenching + cold oil), small cross-section parts to use more oil quenching. Such steel generally after quenching, tempering or normalizing or state of the surface hardening. Mainly used in the manufacture of springs and wear parts. Carbon tool steel is basically not to join the alloying elements in high-carbon steel, tool steel, lower cost, good hot and cold workability, the use of a wide range of steel. The carbon content of 0.65 to 1.35%, is devoted to the production of tool steel. The quality of carbon steel pipe made of high carbon steel is better.

Performance characteristics of high-carbon steel
Advantages:
1, high hardness (HRC60-65) and good wear resistance after heat treatment.
2, moderate hardness in the annealed condition, and has good machinability.
3, raw materials, low production costs.
Disadvantages:
1, rigid differential thermal, a sharp decline when the tool operating temperature greater than 200 ℃, the hardness and wear resistance.
2, low hardenability. When water quenched completely hardenability diameter of typically only 15 to 18mm; hardenability oil quench completely the largest diameter or thickness (95% martensite) is only about 6mm, and easy to crack deformation.
